When a good thing comes to an end...

Quite a few things are going to change on Wednesday. The publisher that brought the Lusty Linguists together will be closing it's doors for good.

Samhain Publishing will cease to exist at the end of this month.

Two days are all we have left.

This is not a drill, people.

We try and make you smile when you come here, but sometimes some real stuff needs to be explained.

So here's what you need to do if you're a Samhain Pub shopper.

1. DOWNLOAD YOUR LIBRARY

If you have an account with Samhain, and even if you've bought a Samhain Publishing book from other places, download it and back it up. I use Calibre to manage my digital library.

These books and the support are going away on Wednesday. Some of the bigger players like iBooks and Amazon should keep your files for you, but if you're paranoid like me, back that ish up.

2. BUY ANY SERIES BOOKS YOU NEED

Like a lot of publishers, series books are popular at Samhain. If there are a few series that have books out and you haven't grabbed them...Hurry your butt up and buy them now. Make that plastic melt.

The authors are getting their rights back, but reformatting, re-covering, and re-publishing takes a lot of time and money, and most authors don't write as their primary day job. Some books may not even come back. There are thousands of Samhain titles. If you are on the fence about any, grab 'em while you can.

3. STALK THE AUTHORS

Some of us were waiting to get our rights back to continue a series or two. (*cough* me *cough* more Hart Clan *cough*)

So the best way to do that is to find them and figure out what comes next is on social media. They will be announcing new releases and re-releases. Trust me. They want to sell these books again.

For example...

You can like my author FB page... HERE
You can follow my ramblings on Twitter....HERE
You can sign up for my soon-to-be-a-newsletter...HERE
Or you can just hit up my soon to be very naked website...HERE

All authors have these and many more ways you can follow and reach out to them. Newsletters are usually the easiest because the info comes to you, and unlike FB that switches up what you see on your feed, the emails you'll get.

4. FORGIVE US FOR GETTING SENTIMENTAL

Samhain Publishing gave me my first "Yes." They allowed me to work alongside authors I admired and fangirled over. They gave me a sink or swim education that can't be learned in a class or at an event, and I will always be grateful for that. Samhain Publishing was the publisher I wanted. Their funny warnings fit so well with my humor and writing style that I still plan on emulating it as I try my hand at some self-publishing.

It's going to be hard over the next month or so at minimum. For all of us.

If you know an author, send them a virtual hug, or a funny meme, or a LOT of chocolate. Hell, just drop them an email and tell them which Samhain title of theirs is in your re-read pile. It would mean the world to them. Trust me. It can be your good deed. I'm going to start off with some of my own favorites. Let's blow up twitter and FB with #myfavoriteSamhainbook. I won't judge you if you tweet out more than one. ;)

If you are a fellow Samhain author...

Taking the good with the bad...

I had a boss a few years back that didn't take me very seriously. He would tell me to suck it up and do as he said. Same man would walk around singing "It's good to be king." Yeah. We didn't work well together.

But he did say one thing that I remember and even though he said it to be an ass, I took something from it.

Whenever I would propose an idea or ask for a new product line he would grin at me and hold out both of his hands.

"Shit in one hand, and wish in the other," he'd say. "See which one fills up the fastest."

Now, he may have meant that life throws more shit at you than grants you wishes. He may have also been implying my ideas were shit. But the reason I bring it up, is the idea of balance.

My job...made me want to balance heavy things against the back of my boss's skull at times. It also made me want to take charge. Because I have found telling people what to do instead of having to follow rules I don't agree with is more my speed.

While I had to deal with my big bad boss on a daily basis, I also learned how to stand up for myself and fight when my ideas were good.

But here's the thing, everyone has a boss. Everyone has someone they answer to. I found that out when I took my boss's job and realized it sucked balls. Now...I didn't go around singing it's good to be queen, but I better understand the mental break he had that caused his outbursts.

I also took home a new understanding for his fecal metaphor.

Wishes don't do anything, and shit piles up when you don't take action. Shit tends to happen even if you think you've got things under control.

There have been a lot of blogs that already covered the topic, but it's hitting me hard lately that my publisher, Samhain Publishing, is about to close it's doors. I could wish all I want that it's not real, and that someone is going to swoop in and make the email pop into my inbox saying it was all some horrible joke, but that's not reality.

They are staying open to publish already finished books, and to keep selling items they have as assets. It gave me the opportunity to buy some of my books in paper that I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise. And I'm going to have a pre-sale for my upcoming release "Love Shack" in the next couple of weeks, because of the paperback stock I was able to acquire. (More details on that coming soon)

"They say when a door closes, another opens." Well...not always. But when a door slams shut on you, there are two options...

1. Hold out your two hands and do my former boss's shit vs. wish experiment.

There's not much that will come of this, I've noticed. I've been burying my head in the sand for a little while now, and it's starting to smell.

2. Grab a sledge hammer and break down a wall until you have a new door.

My publisher is closing. There's not a happy spin on that, and my books are going to be homeless when Samhain Publishing closes their virtual doors for good. Many of my compatriots are putting their books up for self-publication as they have their rights revert, some are submitting these stories to be published elsewhere, and others may end up disappearing all together.

I'm not the type to go quietly into the night, but I'm not sure which wall to take my sledgehammer to yet.

So I'm getting some heavy duty gloves to protect my hands from blisters by asking for advice from friends in the industry who have been there before.

I'm warming up my muscles by continuing to write and promote the books I have control over.

And (have I sufficiently beat this metaphor into the ground yet?) I'm going to make sure I have the best tools available to make my new door.

My experience in the work place helped me learn to take charge. My experience as an author lately helped me realize nothing is permanent. Time to grab my sledgehammer and figure out which wall to knock down next.

I'm thinking I should make the door big enough for a Sasquatch to walk through. Yes, I may have a new book stomping through my brain. It may have left some seriously large footprints.
;)

Witch Princess or Alpha Wolf--which are you? Plus PARTY Wednesday

You may be a witch princess if--
* You're Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.
* You saw all the Harry Potter movies in the theater.
* You custom design your cars in your head, and secretly wish you could make them fly.

You may be an alpha wolf if--
* Your voice holds a growling edge when you're feeling the burn.
* Your first reaction to danger is "Everyone run. I'll fight!"
* You're Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius.

Heart Mates (Pull of the Moon, Book 1)

Witch plus wolf? They’re allergic. Except no one told their hearts.

Shifters and witches? Forbidden on pain of death. Might as well stick a fork in a light socket. Yet those are the kind of sparks witch princess Sophia Blue feels when she meets wolf shifter Noah in her aunt’s bookstore.

But Sophia is stuck. Her aunt is missing and Noah, the last person to see her, is Sophia’s only hope. If not for that and her aunt’s new, cute little doggie, Sophia would run as far as she could from the sexy, hard-hewn alpha.

Noah’s stuck too. Before disappearing, the aunt hit him with a hex gone horribly wrong—he’s the doggie. By day he’s fifteen pounds of yippity-yip, and with five anti-alpha wolves nipping at his heels, that’s deadly dangerous. Only Sophia can help him, but she has lost her magic.

Then an evil mage from Sophia’s past shows up with murder on his mind, and all Noah’s instincts shout to protect the woman his misguided heart thinks is his mate.

Warning: Sinfully sexy alpha thrown together with a hot witch in a small town. Sass, sparkle, a meddling aunt, snafus, growling, fighting, and oh yeah, sex. Might want to get up to date on your shots.

5 Chastity Devices—For Men—You Have to See to Believe! Guest Terri Meeker

From a historian's perspective, chastity devices are fascinating. And really, what is sexier than a historian's perspective?  (Really?  Literally everything?)  I've picked up some fun facts about these bad boys while researching my soon-to-be-released novel, "Not Quite Darcy."

For one - chastity belts for females in the Middle Ages weren't much of a thing. Women didn't really begin using them until after the Industrial Revolution - and even then, they were primarily used as a method to thwart rape.

But male chastity devices? That's a whole different bear trap (and my words may be more literal than you would hope).  These babies absolutely flourished during the Victorian Era.  Why? No less than the looming threat of madness, moral degeneration and death.  Not necessarily in that order.

And how could a metal device strapped around a man's nether regions stop such disasters, you ask? By preventing a young man from 'self abuse.' To Victorians, masturbation wasn't a minor moral failing, but the key to sanity itself.  For instance, Sir Robert Anderson, (the head of Scotland Yard in the late 1800s) told a social purity meeting ‘the harrowing story of an Eton boy, son of a colonel in the army, a brilliant lad, always head of his class, …who had been reduced to driveling imbecility as the result of his secret sin, induced by the sight of an obscene photograph exhibited by a scoundrel whom he met in a railway train.’

Imagine such a world. Where a quick glance at a dirty postcard at Charring Cross might reduce you to drooling idiocy.  Why only a fool wouldn't take strict precautions to avoid such a fate.  Thus, the ultimate cock-blocking devices came into being.

Let's take a quick tour through some of the ingenious designs.

The Self Protector was invented in 1870. A band encircled the body just above the hips. It was locked together by a small padlock, the key to which was carried by 'the person in charge of the masturbator.'  Imagine how well that would look on a resume or in a job interview. "Do you have supervisory experience?" they ask. You grin. "I sure do! Let me tell you allllll about it!"

This is called the Jugum Penis, but let's be honest and call the thing what it is: a wang bear trap. When I first saw this, I sprained something trying to close my browser down. The Victorians were not messing around when it came to erections. Upon the slightest indication of an erection, this baby would remind Mr. Happy of several pointed reasons why he should remain Mr. Sad.

The Bowen Device was a top seller and doesn't seem so bad (especially compared with the last one).  Thing is, this contraption clips directly to your pubes.  So if your little fella becomes aroused, the Bowen Device would begin to yank out all the surrounding pubic hair. Might put a whole new spin on 'Wuthering Heights.'  "Why are you weeping, Heathcliff?" Cathy asked. He only adjusted his crotch, then continued openly sobbing into his hands.

I know what you're thinking! With all this attention to the men, where's something for the females?  How about this little number? It might look like the scariest b-ball outfit you've ever seen, but it's really unisex jammies called Sexual Armor. It was even designed by a woman, Miss Ellen Perkins, of the aptly named Beaver Bay, MN. As Ellen puts it "It is a deplorable but well known fact that one of 'the most common causes of insanity, imbecility and feeble mindedness, especially in youth, is due to masturbation or self abuse. This is about equally true of both sexes."  You're welcome, ladies!

Okay, the Chastity Apron shouldn't count because it was invented in 1977.  But I couldn't resist.  First of all, they're still designing these things? And secondly, you have to love the subtlety of it. And although you couldn't exactly wear this thing, well, anywhere - it would look right at home in the SNL sketch for "Dick in a Box."

Although "Not Quite Darcy" explores this issue, I surely couldn't be so cruel as to force my sweet protagonist into such a torture device.  Could I?

How to woo a gentleman—and weaponize dessert.
Romance novel junkie Eliza Pepper always thought she was born too late, but now she really is stuck in the wrong time. Tasked with mending a tear in the timeline, she’s trying desperately to fit into 1873 London. But dang it, mucking out a fireplace while looking like the lunch lady from hell is hard.
If she can just keep from setting the floor on fire and somehow resist her growing attraction to the master of the house, she’ll be fine. All she has to do is repeat her mantra:  “He’s nothing like Darcy. He’s nothing like Darcy.”
William Brown has always taken pride in his mastery of English decorum, but his new maid is a complete disaster, has thrown his household into chaos…and he finds her utterly captivating.
Though he’s willing to endure extreme physical discomfort to keep their relationship in proper perspective, her arrival has brought out a side of him he never knew existed. And Eliza has an innocently erotic knack for coaxing that decidedly ungentlemanly facet of himself out to play…

Terri Meeker is supposed to write her author blurb in the third person. It’s just how things are done. She shouldn’t question it, but then she’s always been difficult. Even in high school, her best friend’s mother described her as ‘eccentric’ before urging her daughter to make friends with a nice, normal girl.

She was born in Wyoming but has made her home on Fidalgo Island in Washington state. She’s loved history since childhood and has been fortunate to live in lots of places with fascinating pasts, including: Washington DC, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach, Albuquerque, Missouri and Mons, Belgium. She’s an ex-history teacher, a mom a Whedonite, a gamer and a ginormous nerd. She also loves to write.

Terri is really getting into this third person thing and thinks it will give her a lot of gravitas during future dinner conversations. She thinks you should probably start doing it as well.
Her website is at terrimeeker.com. Check it out and you’ll be able to find her on twitter, fb and all that social stuff. She’d love to hear from you. Trust me.

Mommy's Been a Bad, Bad Girl--Guest Eva Siedler

Rough hands glided over her calf, forging a fiery trail up her leg before falling from her skin. She moaned at the loss, begging for the sweet sting of his palm on her—

“Mom, can I have a Popsicle?”

Does this sound like any romance novel you’ve ever read? Yeah, well, me neither. And it sure wasn’t in the parenting brochures.

My friends would tell you that I’m a big fan of sex. A huge, massive, epic kind of fan. But most of my friends are writers. We tend to exaggerate. I won’t deny that I love me some lovin’, but it stopped being the scream-out-loud kind somewhere between “It’s positive!” and “Will he ever stop crying?” At least for the most part.

Every parent has their horror stories about getting busted in the buff. If you have children and it hasn’t happened to you yet, never fear: It will.

My boys are seven and nine. We haven’t had The Talk yet—praise be—but I’m sure it will sound a lot like when my brother got the crash course from the seven-year-old tramp down the street.

He looked up at my parents, hands clasped before him, unmasked hope burning in his wide hazel eyes.

“Please, please tell me you’ve never done that.”

Dad shrugged. “Well, son, I don’t know what to tell you. You’re here, aren’t you?”

My poor, disillusioned brother shook his little head.

“I am so disappointed in you.”

Now, here’s the thing. My parents could have taken that to heart, stifled their love to keep from “disappointing” us further. Or maybe they couldn’t have; I swear they’re part bunny. But they didn’t. They laughed and continued to gross us out with their constant make-out sessions. Hell, they still do.

Some people might say that’s irresponsible parenting. All I know is they were never crude, and my brother and I never had to worry that they would wind up divorced. They wore their love for one another, love on every level, for anyone to see.

So, to all you parents out there who pale at the thought of being interrupted in the middle of a spank session for a Popsicle or who live in fear of your toddler going Hulk and busting down your door, I say perfect the art of the quickie and buy a sturdy lock. Life’s too short to get your panties in a bunch about your sex life. Your sex life’s a lot more fun without the panties, anyway. Don’t let the passion die when that little stinker sniggers on the other side of that locked door and says, “Sounds like Daddy’s getting a spanking.”

Turn to your partner in crime and whisper, “No. But Mommy’s been a bad, bad girl.”

Eva Siedler was born in Columbus, Ohio to parents who enjoy the kind of epic love most people only read about. She didn’t inhale books or scribble stories in a notebook during study hall. Because writing necessitated reading. And she HATED reading. Every paragraph was a battle, and she couldn’t seem to stay awake through the first ten pages. It wasn’t until her own love story unfolded and a colicky baby started keeping her up at night that Eva discovered what good fiction can do for the soul. Writing wasn’t the path she imagined. It’s the path she was born for, and so much better than she could have dreamed.
